Rolling Hills Golf Club

Today we took a break from the championship life, and took a close look at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Tempe, Az. This is a Muni, executive course, with a few par 4s. The layout and design are actually pretty interesting. The course is just north of the famous Mill Ave district. And from a few of the holes you can see Sun devil Stadium as well as Tempe Town Lake. It is a quite and peaceful area, there are no houses within sight, an just on road bordering the course. In a city this size having a place to be able to relax and get away from the chaos is nice. The course is built over the existing earth so it flows nicely, creating some very nice views, and interesting perspectives on holes. The greens are large and surprisingly roll very well. It is a muni so the grass isn't exactly manicured or really taken that much care of. You can tell the difference between fairway and rough, bout only by a little. Most of the greens are hard but in good shape, but the tee boxes leave much to be desired. This course is old and it shows. The pro-shop is old and very out dated, the driving range is very short and you must hit off the mats. There are 2 putting greens, and they are mediocre at best. They are nowhere near the same green you would find on the course. No undulations, nor even close to the same speed. They have a wide variety of green fees depending on when you play and if you are a Tempe resident, but they average between $18-$35 if your a resident and $20-$40 if you are not. The restaurant has been remodeled and updated, and it is actually quite nice. It has 5 very large flat screen TV's and all the decor has been updated and I must say very well designed!! It would be a very nice place to relax after golf and have some beers, which were very reasonable priced. We were there on a Monday and they had a beverage service, despite there only being about 20 players. All of the staff in the shop at Rolling Hills Golf Course were exceptionally nice and professional. It is a little difficult to find sometimes because the course is hidden by the trees, and the entrance is a bit tricky due to a huge median that blocks the view of the course. When playing there you can definatly tell they use very limited resources to maintain and operate the course. It has such a nice layout, but nobody seems to care. However, this is where I get to use a biased opinion. On this particular day Rolling Hills was absolutely exceptional, this is because I recorded my first hole in one, on the par 3 17. The hole is 174 yards and i used a 7 iron. It is truly an amazing feeling to walk up and see your ball lying in the hole. It sure makes that particular hole easy!! Even after that.........

Overall on the IFIGOLF scale of 1-10  Rolling Hills Golf Course gets an 6.

I challenge all of the IFIGOLF fans to debate this on our discussion boards if you think I am wrong!
